Tensions Rise in US-Mexico Relations Over Security Issues

Ambassador Ken Salazar criticizes the previous Mexican administration for rejecting US investments aimed at security. This fallout has escalated tensions, particularly following controversial incidents involving the president's family in Texas.

Tensions Rise in US-Mexico Relations Over Security Issues

Coordination with the United States has faced failures in the last year, mainly because the former Mexican president rejected support from the neighboring country and closed the door to investments exceeding 32 million dollars. Ken Salazar, the U.S. ambassador in Mexico City, made these statements, asserting that the lack of cooperation on security issues has not benefited the Mexican people.

Amid political tension over the election of the less favored candidate for the Senate to head the National Human Rights Commission, Salazar issued a critical and calculated message. He emphasized a turbulent episode in January 2024, when U.S. security agencies photographed one of the president's sons in Texas next to suspicious individuals. Since then, the relationship between the two countries has been affected.

Tensions intensified with the arrest of Ismael "Mayo" Zambada in July, an event that raised alarms in the Mexican presidential circle. López Obrador suspects that Washington has not shared all the information about the case. As a result of these events, communication between the two countries has been hindered, with repercussions on diplomatic relations.

Ken Salazar has criticized the security strategy of the previous Mexican government, indicating that the rejection of assistance from the United States was not a wise decision. The ambassador has also been pointed out for his proximity to business interests beyond his diplomatic duties. In this context, tensions between Mexico and the United States continue to escalate, affecting bilateral cooperation on crucial issues such as security.
